Abandoned Gas Masks in Pripyat

Pripyat is the abandoned city near the Chernobyl power plant

Tim Suess has a collection of fascinating photos from there.

Maybe it isn't fair to tag this as steampunk, since that is locked into the Victorian Age, while this aesthetic fits more with the post-apocalyptic genre set in the near-future.

Fanciful Submarines

Etsier gingerbees has a series of wonderful illustrations her father drew of steampunk vehicles.

"In Loving Memory of my father and Artist: Andrew George Brown 1950-1982. The Original Pen & Ink with marker illustrations were made in the year 1980. It has been 30 years since these master pieces have been seen or reproduced. I have taken the most care and love possible combined with my own fine art background to make sure these images are reproduced with the best possible quality and likeness in essence to their originals within an affordable range. There are 12 Fanciful Submarines in this collection; I hope you enjoy the magic and creativity of these images as much as I do."

Fangoria 2010 - Steampunk Time Machine Haunted House

"A first person walk through of 'Machine', a steam punk horror show we built and performed in our garage."

"it took about 18 months of tinkering in the garage to build it, we've been planning and designing it since way before. There's one top secret bit of kit we had to build first to enable the the machine to travel between scenes. The whole set is only in a normal sized double garage. One of the most time consuming bits of the build was the brick walls in old London, each brick hand carved from polystyrene, that might have been a mistake."

Manly Slang from the 19th Century

The Art of Manliness has a list of a few dozen key slang terms used in Victorian times.

Some are merely amusing:
Fart Catcher A valet or footman, from his walking behind his master or mistress
Sit-upons Trousers

Some give a sense of what the dangers of the times were:
Sneeze-lurker A thief who throws snuff in a person’s face, and then robs him

And some are words I wish were still in use:
Hobbadehoy A youth who has ceased to regard himself as a boy, and is not yet regarded as a man
Rumbumptious Haughty, pugilistic

Mad Science Blocks

IBM Antique Attic

IBM's website has photos and information about their Antique Attic exhibit, showcasing their collection of mechanical calculating devices.

"The nearly 400-year history of mechanized calculation was created by men and women with varying and diverse talents, temperaments, backgrounds and education, working in such fields as mathematics, the sciences, government, business and commerce. It is a history not just of singular inspiration and genius but also the continuing, collective discovery of new materials, skills, technologies and techniques to implement and enhance the plans and dreams of individual inventors and scientists."

Eccentric Genius: Antiques from a Parallel Universe

The P'gaackan Discombobulator

Kaden Harris makes steampunk sculptures, or at least steampunk-like sculptures. According to him, he makes "'machina arcana'- arcane machines" - "antiques from a parallel universe, Da Vinci, Cleese and Neutron still spend every Tuesday night playing poker with Sherlock Holmes, and the Victorian era 'gentleman inventor' still toils diligently in his potting shed laboratory."

Another definition he uses is "randomly selecting medieval, industrial age and art deco influences and gamely struggling to make them all coexist in a post-millennial world. Out of scrap metal. And hardwood."

Anyway, it's cool.
